His commitment to the work itself, and not to the noise of fame-making, was peaceable and corrective. We are reminded, as we close the book, of how much richer this world would be if only we kept our noses out of other people's business. ![]() Plot, in his work, involves the disruption of a tentative balance - the blunt force of gossip, the introduction of an external cruelty, the terrible tentacles of a long-ago hurt.Īnd so, in "Souls," there is plot and there is pain, and when it escalates in this slender novel's final pages, it leaves both the characters and the reader heartbroken. But the world itself isn't always beautiful, and Haruf, a masterful storyteller, understood this. Reading Kent Haruf’s last novel, Our Souls at Night, was different yet it recalled to mind many aspects of Grannie and Gramps’ lives together. He introduces, along the way, a little boy - Addie's grandson - who needs the couple's love, then adds a lame dog to the mix, sending this foursome off into gorgeous, unexceptional adventures. Kent Haruf was known for using simple, spare language to create stories of great depth. But the novel runs, like Harufs others, on the dogged insistence that simple elements carry depth, and readers will find much to be grateful for. ![]() Haruf makes his characters' affection for one another both credible and warming. Our Souls at Night has less grit than Eventide, with its Dickensian views of the lives of the poor, or Plainsong, where favorite characters draw relentless spite its tone is milder and more melancholy.
